Florence, with an estimated diameter of four to nine kilometers, is a giant asteroid and one of the largest in the last 20 years.

Researchers at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) have indicated that they can follow and study it through telescopes and radars.

According to specialists, although it will pass a distance of 18 times that between the Earth and the Moon, in astronomy is considered to be very close to our planet and represents a risk.

For an asteroid to be potentially dangerous it is necessary to have two characteristics, the first one whose size is greater than 140 meters, and the second is that its minimum distance to the earth is less than 19.5 times that the Earth-Moon distance in that sense The asteroid Florencia is a potentially dangerous asteroid, “said Guadalupe Cordero Third of the Institute of Geophysics of the UNAM.

Although smaller asteroids frequently pass close to the Earth and are under study, bodies like this are still of greater scientific interest to astronomers and geophysicists as they study their properties and characteristics.

Their study also helps prevent catastrophes caused by asteroids.

Until now, no asteroid had been as big as Florence or so close to the earth. About Florence, information was already available.

This asteroid was known in 1981, and soon after the name of 1981 ET3 was removed and it was changed to Florence. Close encounters were in 1890 and the next close encounter with this asteroid is going to be until the year 2500, “said Karina Elizabeth Cervantes of the Institute of Geophysics of the UNAM.

The UNAM researchers clarified that there is no risk of Florence colliding with Earth, however, they noted that “gravitational perturbations” could alter its orbit, which would mean that in hundreds of years it could crash with our planet.
